SECRET GARDEN: MAGNUM OPUS

Brooke and Chase’s theatrically imposing sculpture and paintings explore the enigma of alchemy and its recurring cast of characters and symbols. Their work is inspired by neo-gothic and metaphysical themes in pop culture, medieval cosmology, and the occult philosophy of the Renaissance. Alchemy is the intersection of religion, science, and mysticism, serving as both muse and methodological guide in developing their current work.

"Secret Garden" presents a symbolic language through which the alchemist attempts to comprehend the fundamental nature of material and spiritual existence. Central to this exhibition is exploring many characters that symbolically embody distinct stages of the alchemical process. The narrative unfolds through a carefully curated sequence, mirroring the transformative journey inherent in alchemy.

The “prima materia” (first matter), representative of the raw and unrefined essence, undergoes successive stages of calcination, dissolution, coagulation, and sublimation. Each symbolic character becomes a vessel through which the alchemical transformations are rendered visible, providing a visual language for the intricate symbolism associated with alchemy. The characters presented in these artworks draw upon the repeated archetypes and figures found in alchemical manuscripts and treatises of antiquity.

Through a meticulous and complex artistic process, not unlike alchemy itself, Brooke and Chase evoke a sense of contemplation and intrigue with their work, inviting viewers to engage with the layered symbolism inherent within the alchemical tradition. Using biophilic design and naturalistic qualities, Secret Garden encourages dialogue between art, nature, and the perennial quest for transformative enlightenment.
